Common Assessments Used to Diagnose Autism & Estimate Severity

If a family is concerned about their child's development, they should seek out a professional as soon as possible. Early Intervention is key to long term success. However, before a child can begin services with an ABA provider, they will need to receive a formal Autism Diagnosis.


Who can diagnose?

  • Developmental Pediatricians (doctors who have special training in child development and children with special needs)

  • Child Neurologists (doctors who work on the brain, spine, and nerves)

  • Child Psychologists or Psychiatrists (doctors who know about the human mind)

What assessments are used you diagnose Autism?

  • GARS (Gilliam Autism Rating Scale)

  • CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale)

  • ADOS II (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule)
